Orchids are distributed on all continents except Antarctica, but are most abundant and species-rich in the humid tropics and subtropics.

Several factors influence orchids distribution patterns such as moisture and latitudinal gradients. They can be found in almost every habitat, from desert and semiscrub, rain forest and cloud forest, to tundra ecosystems.
