Orchids Conservation assessment
So far, 880 of the species of orchids have been assessed as threatened worldwide, from which 162 species have risk of extinction. However, these numbers are just the tip of the iceberg, as the number of species assessed so far represents 3.14% of the total of species known in this family of plants.
Planta!, in partnership with other organizations, is supporting the IUCN/SSC Cuban Plant Specialist Group to assess the conservation situation of Cuban orchids. Cuba hosts about 315 species of orchids, only 19 have been accurately evaluated.
Knowing the status of orchids populations is the first step toward their conservation.
