Botanical Bridges in the Dominican Republic

The third Congress of the Caribbean and Central American Botanic Garden Network, “Botanical Bridges”, will be held in Santo Domingo. The Organizing Committee has received the support of Planta!-Plantlife Conservation Society as part of the program for the Conservation of the Caribbean flora.

Project: Plant conservation across the Caribbean

 

The National Botanical Garden of Santo Domingo “Dr. Rafael M. Moscoso” will host the event. The Congress “Botanical Bridges III: botanical gardens as a merging point between conservation and the sustainable use of the regional flora” will be held in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, from March 23rd to March 26th, 2020. The event will promote experience exchange in conservation, research and education to solve common challenges faced by regional botanical gardens and research institutions associated.

The National Botanical Garden of Santo Domingo will host the Congress “Botanical Bridges 2020”

Topics covered during the event will include sustainability and conservation in urban forests; conservation education: from the botanical gardens to the community; strategy for plant conservation in the Caribbean; ecological restoration; conservation from the botanical gardens and “Old gardens, new gardens: challenges and opportunities”. “Botanical Bridges III” will have oral presentations, posters and workshops about the work of regional botanical gardens along with botanical expeditions. Staff capacitation will also take place before and after the Congress. Planta!-Plantlife Conservation Society will support several regional attendees with their payments for registration fees, accommodation and flight tickets.

The first Congress “Botanical Bridges” was celebrated in Panama city in 2016; the second one, sponsored by Planta!, at the National Botanical Garden of Cuba in 2018. These meetings were a starting point for the the Caribbean and Central American Botanic Garden Network, which aims to promote “bridges” of collaboration between botanical gardens and similar institutions, botanists and research centers focused in the Caribbean and Central America.

Planta! participated in the second Congress “Botanical Bridges” celebrated in 2018 in Havana, Cuba.

“The National Botanical Garden of the Dominican Republic cancelled the International Congress of Botanical Gardens of Central America and the Caribbean “Botanical Bridges III” due to the global pandemic caused by COVID-19. About 150 attendees from 21 countries had been confirmed before the event cancellation. The Organizing Committee announced that a new date for the meeting will be communicated as soon as the World Health Organization (WHO) confirms that it is safe to do so.”
